We kennen het IDFA natuurlijk wel, maar nu is er het EDFFU: het Eastpackers Documentary Film Festival in Utrecht. Vanaf woensdag 12 januari 2022 tonen wij vier avonden de mooiste documentaires uit en over Oost-Europa in de mooiste stad van Nederland. Elke film wordt ingeleid door één van onze eigen experts. Het Eastpackers Documentary Film Festival vindt plaats op vier woensdagavonden in Utrecht. De data zijn: 12 januari, 9 februari, 9 maart en 13 april. We tonen de beste recente documentaire uit verschillende landen en perspectieven. Elke avond begint met een inleiding en er is een kort nagesprek na afloop. De avonden vinden plaats in WERF 5 in Utrecht (Oudegracht aan de Werf 5). Je kunt een los kaartje kopen voor slechts € 5 of een passe-partout voor alle voorstellingen voor slechts € 15. Kaartjes worden uitsluitend online verkocht in de voorverkoop, zo lang er plek is. Het filmfestival wordt door Eastpackers georganiseerd in samenwerking met NGIZ-NU: het Nederlands Genootschap voor Internationale Zaken.

Woensdag 12 januari 2022 19.30 uur – 21.30 uur : Didube (Georgië, 2017)
In Georgia, at the small bus station in Didube, the characters parade in Niko’s veterinary stall. They are not really customers, some come in by mistake. The discolored poster, with its little cows that have turned blue over time, is the only sign of an activity linked to animals. The shop, with its counter filled with packaging and other unnecessary things, may have been filmed in another era. But here, time stands still, and it is the Georgia of today that is found in this snapshot of the non-stop activity of the station. The catchphrase of Nodar, accompanied by his guitar, rhythms and advances the film, in spurts, according to the arrivals and departures of buses to other destinations perhaps more anchored in the contemporary world. Passers-by, also a little lost, in this place which is only a place of transit, circulate between the buses and the market stands, as if uncertain about the future that the country has in store for them. The Didube terminus will only be a stop before going elsewhere.

Woensdag 9 februari 2022: 19.30 uur – 21.30 uur : Hotel Jugoslavija (Servië, 2017)
Erected in Novi Belgrade in 1969, the Hotel Jugoslavija was a mythical place. It was both a symbol and a witness to the various moments that shaped former Yugoslavia: From Tito to Milosevic; from Socialism to Nationalism; from NATO’s bombings to corrupted economic liberalism.
Today it is still haunting Belgrade’s landscape, as a reflection of a Serbiansociety in search of new milestones.With this journey through the times and spaces of thebuilding, the director – of Yugoslavian origin by his mother but born and raised in Switzerland – explores both a collective unconscious and a part of his own identity.

Woensdag 9 maart 2022: 19.30 uur – 21.30 uur : The Russian Job (Tsjechië, 2018)
Avtovaz Car, the manufacturer of Lada and other brands, is one of the biggest state companies in Russia, not to mention one of the biggest car manufacturing plants in the world. The firm is a great microcosm for contemporary Russian society, and this is exactly how we get to know it in this witty satire, which has Bo Andersson, the new Swedish manager, in the leading role. Everything in and around the factory is reminiscent of the long-gone glory days of communism: the unfathomably large complex with its countless buildings; the tens of thousands of employees, many of whom have very vague job descriptions; the ice bath club; the unused riverboat and the vulgar display of riches in the boss’s house. The big question is whether Andersson can overcome this culture of corruption. Will this ambitious outsider, with all his experience in 18 Russian cities, be able to tame Avtovaz? At least he has a sharp understanding of the paradox facing this country: “Sometimes we say that in Russia people would like to have a revolution, but nothing should change.

Woensdag 13 april 2022: 19.30 – 21.30 uur : Putin’s Getuigen (2018, Letland)
Puttend uit zijn eigen filmarchief geeft gelauwerd filmmaker Vitaly Mansky een intiem verslag van een keerpunt in de recente geschiedenis van Rusland. Op 31 december 1999 droeg president Boris Jeltsin onverwacht de macht over aan zijn zelfgekozen opvolger, Vladimir Poetin. Putin’s Witnesses bestrijkt het eerste regeringsjaar van de politicus die het land terugleidde naar een Sovjet-achtig nationalisme en nu al ruim twee decennia het bewind voert. Die kennis van nu werpt een griezelige schaduw over het gefilmde materiaal.
