ESC in Norheimsund (Noorwegen)

Hardanger maritime center is a part of Hardanger and Voss Museum and have about 40 employees. Using Norway’s maritime cultural heritage as a foundation, we run a museum with a diverse operational structure, which includes, running maritime workshops (boatbuilding, ropewalk, smithy), running various vessels and “camp” schools aboard them. We have rowing boats for rental and arrange rowing events and trips with them, and we also do traditional museum work like documentation, research, education, and exhibitions.
In our clinker boat workshop, we have one experienced boat-builder and an apprentice. We repair and restore wooden clinker-built boats, as well as building new once. Our boatbuilder have many years of experience and also teach the volunteers how to make wooden baskets. At the ropewalk we have one skilled ropemaker and an apprentice, who make many different types of ropes from natural fibers. We always try to have different types in stock, but also make on demand. Most of the ropes are used in the rig on traditional sailing vessels. In the smithy we have two blacksmiths who make anything needed in the workshops and on the vessels that we have in for restoration or maintenance. They make nails, rig-parts, tools and many other things needed in this line of work. The shipyard has most people at work and are mainly documenting and restoring old wooden vessels.
Our own sailing vessel “Mathilde” is mostly run as a camp school for secondary school children, but they also have leisure trips of different kind. We have around 20 000 visitors a year. During the fall, winter and spring there are mostly different courses in different crafts, school classes learning about maritime history and groups seeking a new experience. During summer we have longer opening hours and have many tourists on vacation.

Project duration: +- 10 months

About Norheimsund

Hardanger Maritime Center is in Norheimsund by the Hardanger fjord, about 1,5 hours from Bergen by bus. The name of the municipality is Kvam, that have about 8500 inhabitants and stretches around 100 km from one end to the other. The two main villages are Norheimsund and Øystese with around 2500 inhabitants each. There you will find shops and businesses for most needs. Many local organizations offer many different leisure activities such as soccer, volleyball, cross-country and downhill skiing, indoor climbing, karate and other sporting activities. There are also several orchestras, both brass and janissary who are always looking for musicians to play along with. These are all nice arenas to get to know local young people.
