ESC in Madeira (Portugal)

A walk through the History of Madeira intends to present the culture, history, and heritage of Madeira through guided tours and other cultural activities such as exhibitions or fado concerts. As a volunteer you will lead guided tours for tourists along different historic sites in the city of Funchal. Skills and competencies you will develop range from linguistic abilities to time management and public speaking, as well as awareness of European values, such as tolerance and cultural diversity.

You will also be involved in the preparation and organization of tours, expositions and other activities. This includes desk research (social sciences), writing articles and creating promotional materials. There is room for your own input and personal projects. For the full set of (possible) tasks check the info box to the right.

The tours are part of the Madeiran Heritage program of the University of Madeira Students’ Union (AAUMa). The project has previously won two national awards: the National University Volunteering Award and a National Award for Good Practices in Youth Associativism. By performing the guided tours and explaining their purpose to the guests, the volunteer assumes a very important role in the promotion of the social support programmes developed by AAUMa. These programmes include the refurbishment of the University of Madeira, providing school supplies and daily meals to less fortunate students or acquiring scientific publications for the library of the University of Madeira.

Flexible start dates and durations.
