During ten fun-filled days, you will visit not only the capital cities of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden, but also the blissful Baltic forests and coastlines. Summer is the best time to explore this region of seemingly endless daylight and mild, sunny weather. Our Best of Baltics trip kicks off in Vilnius, the fun capital of Lithuania, known for its baroque architecture, hipster culture and summer festivals. Despite four decades of communist oppression in the 20th century, Vilnius, as well as the capital cities of neighbouring Latvia and Estonia, have all retained their historical centres, which are all a delight to explore on foot. Luke called Riga home for half a year, and is thrilled to show you around in his favourite Baltic capital.
The Baltics, however, have much more to show than vibrant cities steeped in history. This lowland of forests, lakes and sandy coastlines has plenty of quaint villages and national parks to explore. We will take you on a tour through the bogs of central Latvia, which you will traverse on boardwalks; and we will spend a night on the shores of Estonia's beautiful Peipus Lake. Here, you will encounter a picture-perfect place to enjoy a bbq and observe the beautiful sunsets this region is known for.
Estonia, as well as the other Baltics, might be progressive havens of freedom, but the specter of their big neighbour Russia is never far away. This will be clearly visible in the Estonian border town of Narva, where one can see the Russian flag waving on the opposite side of the Narva river. Although we will of course stay on the safe side of this frontier of freedom, Narva is the best place to learn more about the history and geopolitical reality that the Baltic States cope with.
After a week in the Baltics, we will finish with a long weekend in two of the better known Baltic capitals: Helsinki and Stockholm. The capitals of Finland and Sweden are quite different and are both more than worth your time. A highly comfortable ferry connects these cities, crossing the Baltic Sea during the night and offering some of the best late-night sunset opportunities in Europe.
Throughout the journey, Eastpackers and Luke Hoogmoed will share their passion for these relatively unexplored lands through personal stories and deep insights into the history and culture of the region. Your guides
This trip will be hosted by Luke Patrick Hoogmoed and Bram Jongejan, one of Eastpackers' expert tour guides. Luke lived for half a year in Riga and will gladly show you around in one of his favourite cities. Bram has extensively traveled through all the Baltics and Scandinavia and will also make sure that all the logistics of the trip are taken care of. During the different activities, Luke will contribute by sharing insights from his own travel experience in all five countries that we visit and will provide additional recommendations and advice about discovering the many secrets of Northern, Central and Eastern Europe.
