Volunteering in Iceland

Environment Camp Coordinator – volunteers who assist in coordinating and participating in the international Nature & Conservation workcamps around Iceland, and in the winter environment educational activities and virtual camps, as well as social solidarity projects in Reykjavík. They also act as a link between the Icelandic hosts and the international short-term volunteers.

Photography Camp Coordinator – volunteers who assist in coordinating and participating in the international camps relating to photography, environmental awareness, and coordinating our arts and culture projects in Reykjavík. They also participate in our social solidarity projects in Reykjavík.

Communication & PR Volunteer – volunteers who are based in our office in Reykjavík and who assist in being a communication link between local and partner organisations from other countries; keeping up-to-date quality and performance procedures; creation and management of online content in SEEDS social media accounts; and participating in SEEDS artistic, cultural and educational activities. They also participate in our social solidarity projects in Reykjavík.

SEEDS is looking for candidates who are motivated and who show an interest and concern towards intercultural cooperation, environmental issues and preservation practices, artistic expression and creativity. The participants need to be ready to show some level of flexibility, adaptability, and have the ability to work independently, as well as in a team. Solution-oriented mindset as well as community living will be a very important aspect of the experience. Volunteers should be ready to implement and improve their leadership skills, public speaking skills, social skills and organisational skills. All our volunteers are required to be comfortable in communicating in English. We encourage people with fewer opportunities to apply and to state in their application that they recognize themselves as such.

Food is provided for everyone and the shopping is completed according to SEEDS’ standard shopping list,
ensuring that every volunteer has a balanced diet. During the camps that take place outside of Reykjavík, the
local project coordinator will be in charge of providing the food.

Volunteers stay in a shared flat (max. four people per room) in Reykjavík and return there between camps. They
will most likely stay close to the centre of Reykjavík, where they can relax during their free time.

While in camps, accommodation is also provided in shared rooms. Every project is different and so the
accommodation will vary depending on the facilities available. SEEDS will ensure the hosting conditions meet
quality standards so all volunteers enjoy a good and safe place to live during the camps.

Domestic transport between camps and the accommodation in Reykjavík will be provided by SEEDS.

The main language used throughout the project is English. Basic introduction to the Icelandic language will be
offered to the volunteers at the beginning of their stay, this is optional.

Each volunteer works a maximum of 38 hours a week. When leading a project, the volunteer might work during the weekend and receive days off during the usual working week, depending on the dates of the project and weather conditions. Volunteers take enough free days (on average four) after a camp to rest. Volunteers are entitled to two days holiday per month during their work with SEEDS.

SEEDS is located in Reykjavík, when leading camps the volunteers will also travel around the country side.
